Valerie Hegarty

While this blog is dedicated to Rothko, I think it is important to recognize how an artist has effected art.  I believe rothko has had a profound effect on the art community.  So I’m going to make some post about artist who have used Rothko as inspiration.

I recently stumbled upon this artist while looking for pictures of Rothko’s work.  Valerie Hegarty is a contemporary artist.  Her work is on display in museums in Chicago, New York, and London. The Nicelle Beauchene Gallery in New York shows her work and their website has slideshow of her peices on her website.

Valerie Hegarty Rothko Sunset, 2007

Hegary’s use of Rothko in her own works shows how he is still relevant to the art world, even though he commited suicide 40 years ago.  I think it’s interesting that Hegarty uses the color field technique that Rothko popularized to depicted the colors of a sunset and then burns the bottom of the canvas.  It is almost as if the painting was touched by the sun and adds more emotion to the painting.
