The segrum murals are perhaps one of Rothkos most famous group of paintings, begin sited as the way Rothko broke from being an unknown artist. However, Rothkos motivation behind the paintings is almost more facsinating then the paintings themselves (almost).
In an article in the Guardian it states Rothko, “wanted to upset, offend and torture the diners at the Four Seasons, that his motivation was entirely subversive….’I hope to ruin the appetite of every son of a bitch who ever eats in that room,’ he gloated, with paintings that will make those rich bastards ‘feel that they are trapped in a room where all the doors and windows are bricked up.’”
Whatever the reason behind these paintings there are some of my favorite by Rothko. At the moment they are on display at the Tate Museum in London.
